Field Works on Campus
On 6 May, we as student educated by Prof Suhaimi about IIUM purposes to lead its university toward the changes of sustainable campus where students as agent of change.
I gained insight into IIUM's sustainability efforts and how students can play a vital role in fostering a greener campus environment. We explored the idea of a sustainable campus, which involves maintaining a balance between environmental, economic, and social factors, as represented in the sustainability Venn diagram. Several major initiatives were discussed, including the Energy Efficiency Programme, Solar Energy Generation, and Food Waste Composting. These projects demonstrate IIUM’s dedication to waste reduction and the adoption of renewable energy. The Food Waste Composting initiative, for example, helps cut down on disposal costs and lessens environmental harm, though it faces setbacks like decreased waste availability during holidays.

Events such as IIUM World Clean-Up Day, the Plogging Hike, and the Humility Day toilet hygiene campaign further encouraged student engagement in maintaining campus cleanliness and environmental responsibility. Ultimately, I came to understand that sustainability is a shared responsibility, and that even small efforts like recycling, composting, or using solar power can make a meaningful impact.
It's great to know that IIUM really emphasise the importance of sustainable development around the campus.
