Week 2: Islam & SDG
Islam & SDG
On 11 March, Prof Suhaimi has assigned to us 2 slides of lecture:
The first slide taught me that Islam offers a holistic approach to sustainable development by addressing spiritual, social, economic, and environmental aspects. The Qur'an and Hadith emphasize environmental care, including reducing waste, conserving water, and managing forests sustainably, while underscoring the values of responsibility and preservation. Social sustainability is rooted in the concept of humans as Khalifah (stewards) of the Earth, guided by values such as Shura (mutual consultation) and Amanah (trust), which promote fairness and justice. In terms of economics, Islam supports wealth distribution through Zakat and Waqaf, bans exploitative practices like Riba (interest), and advocates for mindful, sustainable consumption.
Islam, Maqasid Shariah & SDG
Prof Suhaimi covered 3 week slide realier cause the next class on public holiday and he has sent the specific slide for 3 week.
The slide on Islam, Maqasid al-Shariah, and its alignment with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) highlighted that the five core objectives of Maqasid which protection of faith, life, intellect, lineage, and wealth, closely parallel the UN's "5Ps": People, Planet, Prosperity, Peace, and Partnership. For example, preserving life aligns with promoting peace, safeguarding intellect supports human empowerment, and protecting lineage reflects concern for environmental sustainability. The presentation also emphasized that spiritual values, such as humility and stewardship (Khalifah), are fundamental to fostering sustainability. Furthermore, it drew comparisons with other major religions such Buddhism, Confucianism, Christianity, and Hinduism where revealing shared ethical principles focused on ecological balance and interfaith cooperation.
On this week also, Prof Suhaimi assigned to us the assignment of blogging, newspaper article and project where he ask us to form a group consist of 5 members
